Hello Lions fans,
After last season it looks as if the the Lions have found their franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford. Well I’m here to tell you why he is the best quarterback in Lions history. Stafford’s season last year was nothing short of spectacular. Fifth most passing yards in history, four comeback wins, and took the Lions somewhere they hadn’t been for a while, the playoffs. Matthew Stafford holds most major Lions passing records and I’m here to break it down for you.
I will start with single game records. Gary Danielson held the record for most touchdown passes in a game with 5. Stafford has tied that record twice, the first time in the famous separated shoulder game against the Cleveland Browns when he connected with his fifth touchdown to Brandon Pettigrew on the final play of the game with a separated shoulder, that’s guts baby. The second time was the final game of the year last year against the Green Bay Packers. Also in that game Stafford passed the Lions record for most yards in a single game held by everybody’s favorite Lions quarterback Jon Kitna. Kitna set the record at 446 and Stafford smashed it with a 520 yard performance.
Matthew Stafford put together the best statistical season by a Lions quarterback in history, breaking records along the way. Scott Mitchell held the Lions record for most touchdowns in a season at 32. That was no match for Stafford who cruised by him to set the record for at 41. Mitchell also held the record for most yards in a season for the Lions at 4,338 but Stafford roared by that to set the record at 5,038 yards and that stands as the fifth most yards in a season in NFL history.
It’s only a matter of time before Matthew Stafford breaks every career passing record in Lions history all of which are held by Hall of Famer and former Lions great Bobby Layne. Layne holds the career records for yards(15,710), touchdowns(118), and completions(1,074). Stafford is on pace to break all of those records in the 2013 season. His statistics currently are 7,840 yards, 60 touchdowns, and 679 completions.
The most amazing part of all of this is Matthew Stafford is only 24, just completed his first full season in the NFL, and has the best receiver in the NFL Calvin Johnson locked in to a long term contract. Matthew Stafford is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL heading into this season, but he is already the best Lions quarterback to lace up cleats and step on the field.
